Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek is reflective of both the city’s diversity and its long history.

Welcome to Walnut Creek

The luxe retail haven graced with a central location and picturesque natural scenery
Set between the unspoiled vastness of Briones Regional Park and the rolling foothills of Mt. Diablo, the city of Walnut Creek surprises with its refreshing harmony between nature and bustling commercial districts. Centrally located just 20 minutes east of Oakland and bisected by several major commuter arteries like I-680, Walnut Creek is a commuting paradise where convenience is plentiful.

Walnut Creek is a hub for nearby, smaller cities that benefit from its surplus of retail amenities and easy highway access. The town was incorporated in 1914, but its history spans well before this, beginning with the original occupiers — the Bay Miwok Native Americans. Present-day Walnut Creek has transformed itself over the centuries into the residential hotspot it is today.

The residential real estate market of Walnut Creek is reflective of both the city’s diversity and its long history. Multimillion-dollar, single-family homes abound in the open space preserves tucked on the outskirts of town, while sophisticated condos and well-appointed townhomes are available closer to Broadway Square for those who want to be at the center of the commercial action.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Walnut Creek is a spirited mixture of boutique shopping and remarkable dining and is well-known for its culinary scene that spans an international range of flavors. Around the town’s lively Downtown, Broadway Plaza, and Main Street are a host of excellent venues, intermingling with performance theaters, music venues, and lifestyle service facilities like salons and spas.

Renowned as a high-end fine-dining institution, Flemings serves up greatness in the form of its heavenly prime steaks and lobster tails. Maria Maria’s is where music and cuisine collide for a show-stopping experience highlighted with slurp-worthy margaritas, bold and authentic Mexican flavors, and traditional live music.

The Main Street commercial district is also populated with more than 200 stores, including upscale national brands like Nordstrom’s, Pottery Barn, and Athleta. Luxury designer shops are common in this area, too, with top-tier names like Chanel and Tiffany & Co. rounding up the bounty of offerings.

Things to Do

As a city rich in artistic flair, it should come as no surprise that Walnut Creek is brimming with ways to engage in the arts and grow cultural awareness. The Civic Center for Community Arts, for instance, offers an extensive selection of classes across various mediums, accessible to all ages and abilities.

Each year, Walnut Creek celebrates local creators and flavors at the Art and Wine Festival, a long-standing tradition that began in the 1980s. More than 80,000 attendees come to the two-day event, which features art exhibitions along with live music, wine tastings, and vendors of craft and food.

The annual Walnut Festival is more focused on the town’s history and local culture and begins with a morning parade that leads into a day of carnival rides, dozens of vendors, live music, and even free fishing at Heather Farm Lake. The event is held at the scenic Heather Farm Park, a vast community gathering place of over 100-acres that has everything from playgrounds and sports fields to equestrian facilities and skate parks.
